Detroit: Midtown’s Oak & Reel
This week we are featuring a newer restaurant we have been wanting to try since it opened in Fall of 2020, during the height of the Covid craziness: Oak & Reel, Hour Magazine’s 2022 restaurant of the year.
Metro Detroit: Livonia’s Zo’s Good Burger
We are back with this week’s Fun Food Friday adventure which takes us back to another local gas station. This time it’s an Exxon station on the NE corner of 6 Mile and Haggerty, inside is Zo’s Good Burger. We have had a handful of people ask us about Zo's so we had to make sure to get there. Zo’s has been around since 2015ish in their Dearborn location but only opened earlier this year in Livonia so of course we had to add it to our list of Fun Food Friday adventures.
Detroit: Burger Battle in Eastern Market
This was our first time attending the Detroit Burger Battle so we were not sure what to expect. It didn’t disappoint. The Burger Battle is a burger competition between local restaurants, showcasing their signature burgers. Each participant could sample as many burgers as they could handle and then were asked to vote for their top 3 choices.
Detroit: Midtown’s IMA
As mentioned earlier this week, we were out doing some recon for this weeks post. It is actually a revisit to one of our favorite places, featured back before the Covid shutdown . . . IMA!
We have become huge fans of noodles with rich broth. It can be Ramen, Udon or Pho. When it is done right, it is delicious. Of course we are not talking about the store bought packaged ramen, but real legitimate noodles and broth that has been simmered and seasoned for maximum flavor.
Metro Detroit: Livonia’s Mr. Miguel’s
This week we decided that Mexican was in order and we are featuring a new restaurant that opened late last year, Mr. Miguel’s. This is a place Teresa and I have been talking about since it opened but had not been able to get to since they don’t open until 2PM Mon-Thurs, but we were finally able to made it happen.
Detroit: Downtown’s Wright & Co.
This week we are going upscale dining with a laid back atmosphere. I’m talking about Wright & Co. This was not my first experience with Wright & Co but it was Teresa and Dylan’s. Since my first time there they have made a lot of changes, one in particular was the reason to go back for a new experience. His name is Chef Kyle Schutte.
Best Of: Oven Baked Subs
This week we are going with something simple, yet almost everyone seems to love...submarine sandwiches AKA subs, heros, grinders or hoagies. We are not talking about any sub, but more specifically the “oven baked” variety. Teresa and I love a good hot oven baked sub . . . not a hot sub cooked and thrown into a cold bun, but one that is actually baked in the oven on a good Italian or French roll or maybe a nice ciabatta bun.
Metro Detroit: Plymouth’s Hermann’s Olde Town Grille
This week we are venturing to Plymouth, specifically Plymouth’s Old Village, to Hermann’s Old Town Grill. We don't know how we haven't featured Hermann’s in the past. It is the type of place we are drawn to, and only a few miles from where we live. It is a great neighborhood bar/restaurant that has everything we look for when we go out. A great selection of domestic and craft beers, nice pour of bourbon, good food, lively atmosphere, game room and a moose head over the bar.
Detroit: Midtown’s Honest John’s
This week we are visiting one of our favorite Midtown bars which on top of being a great bar, with a great atmosphere, also has great food…Honest John’s. Honest John’s, in Detroit, is a midtown neighborhood staple since 2002 when John Thompson moved the bar from its original location near Belle Isle on Detroit’s East side where he opened in the early 90s.
Detroit: Eastern Market
This week is not just about 1 restaurant, it is about the weekend experience that is Eastern Market. This Sunday is the official Flower Day - the Sunday after Mother’s Day. However, it is not the only flower day at the market this year. They are having them every Sunday in May, to help keep the crowds down. Flower Day runs from 7AM – 5PM in all sheds of the market.
Detroit: Midtown’s Condado Tacos
It’s me…your favorite Realtor and lover of all food (well almost all food) here with this weeks Fun Food Friday. With yesterday being Cinco de Mayo, it got me thinking about Mexican food. I know everyone has their favorite Mexican restaurant, as we do, but if you want to try something new give Condado’s in Midtown Detroit a try.
Metro Detroit: Grosse Pointe Park’s The Charlevoix
his week, for Fun Food Friday, we are venturing to The Charlevoix in Grosse Point Park. Our intention was to get to the Cadieux Café . . . but they were not open at the time we were in the area, so we happily called an audible and ended up here and what a good audible it turned out to be.
Metro Detroit: Hazel Park’s Matt & Mo’s
Matt & Mo’s, which started as a food truck, has the most delicious Italian Beef we have ever had. We actually found them by accident in 2017 or 2018 while on a day drinking adventure in Corktown. It was one of those days that you don’t think eating is your top priority until it is almost too late. When we decided we were going to eat nothing was open near us and we saw a line at a food truck parked the next block down so why not…let’s give it a try.
Metro Detroit: Livonia’s Black Label Tavern
Teresa and I have been wanting to feature this Livonia restaurant for a while and here it finally is. It is a local favorite to many Livonia residents and they have a very diverse menu with something for everyone. Also a great place for a Good Friday Fish n Chips or Shrimp Tacos…Black Label Tavern.
Recipe: Blueberry Pancakes
Breakfast for dinner anyone? How about some homemade blueberry pancakes? We love eating breakfast food for dinner and blueberry pancakes are a household favorite. If blueberries aren’t your thing you can go plain or use other fresh fruit or chocolate chips. This is a delicious, quick and easy recipe that can be whipped up in about 10 minutes with ingredients kept in most pantries.
Recipe: Fish & Chips
I have received a lot of suggestions to do a “Fun Food Friday “ fish-n-chips edition. I did do this in the past, featuring a different place each week for a good Friday fish fry. Most restaurants offer their fish-n-chips on Fridays - most in an “all you can eat” special. However…how about making your own at home?
Metro Detroit: Schoolcraft College’s American Harvest Restaurant
This week we are featuring the American Harvest Restaurant at Schoolcraft College. Yes we have featured it in the past, but it is worth revisiting since it has been a few years. For those of you who are unaware, Schoolcraft College’s culinary arts program has their own restaurant that serves gourmet food at reasonable prices.
Detroit: Restaurant Spotlight - Leila
We were in the mood for Middle Eastern food, so we tried a new place downtown Detroit. Leila is an upscale Middle Eastern / Lebanese restaurant located 1245 Griswold between State St and Grand River near Capital Park. We had seen and heard many good things about Leila, which opened in October of 2019. It was voted restaurant of the year by the Free Press in 2020.
Recipe: Red Beans & Rice
The days are getting longer but it is still cold out and this is a good recipe for those cold winter evenings. Teresa and I are big fans of Cajun and creole style cooking. We decided to make Red Beans & Rice from scratch as a meal, not a side dish.
Metro Detroit: Krispy Krunchy Chicken of Plymouth
Who out there doesn’t love good fried chicken? I know I had seen Krispy Kruncky Chicken in my local travels and found they are in a few locations around us as well so we thought we would give it a try.
