Metro Detroit: Lakeport’s Lakeshore Smokehouse
In 2011, in the height of the foreclosure crisis, Gary and Vicki Brown purchased this property, which at the time was a small landscaping company call Northland Gardens. They already owned landscaping and lawn service companies and thought it would be a nice addition to their businesses. In 2012, they decided to add a little trailer, selling some smoked ribs, brisket and pulled pork, to attract some tourist drive-bys and people from the state park across the street…thus Lakeshore Smokehouse was born. At first glance, this unique eatery might not catch your eye. In fact, you might have driven past Lakeshore Smokehouse during previous trips without taking a second look..
Recipe: Mom’s Chicken & Dumpling Soup
In 1989 there was a restaurant in Farmington called Rueben’s Rueben which I ran with my family for 3 years. It has been many different places since then, and is currently Taqueria Victoria. Rueben’s Rueben featured sandwiches and subs, burgers and fries, and homemade chili and soups. I’m not 100% sure how or when it started, but sometimes on Wednesdays my mom (being the southern woman that she was) would make chicken and dumpling soup. It was an instant hit and became so popular we made it our regular Wednesday soup. It was so popular that people would call the day before to pre-order it for the following day. We only made a certain amount and some days we would run out before noon…and we opened at 10:30.
Michigan: Lakeport’s Lakeshore Smokehouse
This week’s FFF was featured back in 2019 but so much has changed there, we felt the need to give them another shout out. It is absolutely one of our favorite places for some delicious smoked meats, which you can tell are cooked with pride. Lakeshore Smokehouse in Lakeport MI just north of Port Huron.
Michigan: Kalkaska’s Shirley’s in the Woods
We are up in Grayling, to visit our daughter Alyssa, and enjoy the festivities of the "Grayling to Oscoda Canoe Marathon" which starts tomorrow evening at 9PM.
We were told about this fantastic place for breakfast and for those of you who know me, I love a good breakfast . . . especially a diner breakfast. Shirley's in the Woods, on M-72 at Bear Lake Rd in Kalkaska. This came with high recommendations (thank you Bridget Kastl) so we had to check it out.
