Michigan: Kalkaska’s Shirley’s in the Woods

It is Friday and that means it must be time for this week's Fun Food Friday...up north edition.

We are up in Grayling, to visit our daughter Alyssa, and enjoy the festivities of the "Grayling to Oscoda Canoe Marathon" which starts tomorrow evening at 9PM.

We were told about this fantastic place for breakfast and for those of you who know me, I love a good breakfast . . . especially a diner breakfast. Shirley's in the Woods, on M-72 at Bear Lake Rd in Kalkaska. This came with high recommendations (thank you Bridget Kastl) so we had to check it out.

It's definitely an up north diner. Everything we were hoping for...a long diner counter with stools 3 feet off the ground, coffee cup with shirtless hunk for Teresa, lots of wood paneling and vinyl booths with local ads laminated to the table tops. Home-cooked food, fresh baked bread and a checker board on the table so we could play checkers while we waited.

We had their biscuits and gravy (a must in a small diner) Sam's Favorite and the Rise and Shine. Nice portions and everything was delicious...loved the homemade bread.

Up next...highlights of our "Eat Detroit" adventure next Wednesday August 3rd.

Until next week, Live Well, Eat Well.
