Nothing beats the food and atmosphere of a small town diner.  You can always tell the home cooked, scratch made food that is from the heart.  Ma’s Diner in Onaway is no different.  They opened their doors in 2023 and are going strong today.  They open daily at 4:30 for all the early birds who want to get in before they have to get to work.   

It was a Thursday, March 29th to be exact.  It was Opening Day for the Tigers in 2018 and the weather was not good.  The game actually was rained out.  But that didn't stop all the pre-planned opening day parties and celebrations from happening.  My last destination was the Corktown Tavern, yes in Corktown.  Due to the weather and the game being canceled they closed down early.  I parted ways  with the group I was with, and suddenly realized I could not find my car keys.  Yes, I had locked them in my car.  The Corktown Tavern was closed.  It was raining, cold, and my phone was on life support.  I was able to get someone to rescue me, but they couldn't be there for over an hour.  I couldn't wait outside in the rain and I needed a place to stay dry and warm. This week we are going to the Hudson Cafe.   We have known of the Hudson Café for many years and have eaten at their downtown location a few times.  Just recently, they opened their 2nd location in Northville . A 3rd location is coming to Troy, later this year or early next year. 

We are up in Grayling, to visit our daughter Alyssa, and enjoy the festivities of the "Grayling to Oscoda Canoe Marathon" which starts tomorrow evening at 9PM.

We were told about this fantastic place for breakfast and for those of you who know me, I love a good breakfast . . . especially a diner breakfast. Shirley's in the Woods, on M-72 at Bear Lake Rd in Kalkaska. This came with high recommendations (thank you Bridget Kastl) so we had to check it out.

This week we are visiting one of our favorite Midtown bars which on top of being a great bar, with a great atmosphere, also has great food…Honest John’s. Honest John’s, in Detroit, is a midtown neighborhood staple since 2002 when John Thompson moved the bar from its original location near Belle Isle on Detroit’s East side where he opened in the early 90s.

Breakfast for dinner anyone? How about some homemade blueberry pancakes? We love eating breakfast food for dinner and blueberry pancakes are a household favorite. If blueberries aren’t your thing you can go plain or use other fresh fruit or chocolate chips. This is a delicious, quick and easy recipe that can be whipped up in about 10 minutes with ingredients kept in most pantries.
