Metro Detroit: Northville’s Rocky’s

C.A. Muer Restaurant Group was founded in 1965 by  the legendary restaurateur Chuck Muer, which at its peak had 18 restaurants in 4 states.  Charles Rachwitz, also known as Chuck or Rocky, worked for the C.A. Muer restaurant group for 18 years. He served as their Corporate Executive Chef and was a mentor to many future chefs in the Detroit area.  Rocky was a integral part of the Muer Corporation by creating and establishing many successful restaurants for his mentor and best friend Chuck Muer.  A year before the tragic disappearance at sea, of Chuck and his wife in 1993, he helped Rocky turn the former Northville Charlie’s restaurant into Rocky’s of Northville and he is still going strong today.

Rocky’s must be doing something right to still be going strong 32 years later.  It has a solid following of long time loyal customers who you will see there on a regular basis.  I can see why! The food is always good, the atmosphere is upbeat yet not too crazy and the service (the times we have been there) is always on point.

The happy hour here is a good one! Happy hour runs Tuesday thru Friday from 3-6 PM and the bar fills up fast.  They have

  • $4 beers (draft  and domestic bottle)

  • $4 wines and well drinks

  • $8 appetizers

You have to be seated at the bar in the Kodiak Room to get the $8 appetizers (a $5 savings off the regular menu price) however the $4 drink specials are throughout the entire bar area.

They offer 5 choices for $8 each.

  • Spinach and artichoke dip made with Boursin cheese, topped with Pico de Gallo and served with homemade tortilla chips.

  • Blackened Fish Tacos served with shredded cabbage, Jalapeño Lime Sauce and Pico de Gallo.

  • Fried Calamari served with Provençal sauce (a French tomato sauce which could be served  as a dish by itself)  What we liked best about this is the pieces of fried banana pepper ring mixed in with the calamari.

  • Fried Brussels sprouts with balsamic syrup, applewood bacon and topped with blue cheese crumbles.

  • Mussels Casino.  A generous portion of Mussels, steamed right in front of you at the bar by Chef Hugo, with a garlic casino butter (herbed garlic butter) white wine and sherry.  The left over juice is the best.  They serve you fresh bread and butter to dip into it with…it’s soooo good.

You can also order other item off the regular lunch or diner menu at regular price.  Chef Hugo was also steaming up other dishes with scallops and other seafood for some of the guests at the bar.

A popular item we saw them serving a lot of was the Gazpacho, a cold tomato based soup traditionally made with other fresh vegetables like cucumber, peppers, onion and garlic.  It is definitely on our list for our next visit.

Want to save even more.  Visit the Costco in Livonia on Haggerty where you can usually pickup 2 $50 gift cards for Rocky’s for $80…an  additional 20% saving.

Rocky’s is located 41122 7 Mile road in Northville Township about a mile west of Haggerty road.  They are open Tuesday – Thursday 12PM-9PM, Friday 12PM -  10PM, Saturday 4PM – 10pm and Sundays 1PM to 8PM and closed on Monday

Check them out you won’t be disappointed.

Until next time . . . live well, eat well and enjoy life!
