Metro Detroit: Clawson Steak House

This week’s Fun Food Friday we are going to an old school steak house that has been going strong for over 60 years… The Clawson Steak House in, of course, Clawson. Voted best steakhouse in metro Detroit by Hour Magazine in 2014 and 2015.  Often referred to as a “Roadhouse-Nightclub”, Clawson Steak House opened their doors in 1958.  The entire restaurant seems like it has never been changed.  It has an old-school feel, in décor, atmosphere and even the menu. They also have live jazz music and dancing on weekends.  According to Kim Alex, who owns the restaurant with her husband Jim “It is reminiscent of the old Sinatra Days.  It’s a real, traditional supper club”.

As the name implies, steaks are what they are known for. The Sizzler Delmonico is served on a sizzle platter and topped with their house-made au jus. The New Yorker, filet and bone-in wagyu are equally popular. The lamb chops are enormous and for the old-school crowd, the liver and onions remain a continual hit. Their steaks and chops are hand-cut, fish is delivered daily, and sides like bread and salad dressing are homemade. Their signature 30 oz Porterhouse is just one of many great steak selections available.

Aside from the mildly pricey signature steaks and chops, other dinners average around $25. All entrees include a basket of fresh baked bread (along with those standard hard breadsticks with the seeds all over them) soup du jour, or French onion-cheese for $1.50, garden salad and choice of steak fries, fresh vegetables, pasta or rice. We had the Prime Rib Sandwich, French Onion soup and a side salad. I would have that sandwich again and again and again. We went at lunch time and liked it so much we came back to check out the evening vibe and live music. It did not disappoint. We really felt like we got in a ti me machine and went back to the Las Vegas supper club days. The pictures do not do justice.

True to their style, they don’t have an automated reservation system.  You have to call on the phone, like back in the day, to make your rezzies!    Check out their menu here. The Clawson Streak House is located at 56 Rochester Rd. just south of 14 Mile.  They are open 11AM to midnight Mon-Sat and closed on Sunday.

Until next time…eat well, live well and enjoy life!
