Detroit: Royale With Cheese

This week we are visiting a Mid-town Detroit Burger Joint that opened it’s doors in 2017, in the heart of Detroit’s Cass Corridor on the Corner of Cass and Willis: Royale With Cheese .  Honestly, we have driven by this place a thousand times, yet we had never been here until recently.

We thought “well it’s just a burger joint” which it is, but it is so much more than that.  Sure they have burgers . . . . some damn good burgers!  The cheese sauce that they use is amazing!

Owners Haas Bazzy and Moe Ettaher say the name is inspired by the 1994 movie Pulp Fiction and the iconic scene when Jules (Samuel Jackson) and Vincent Vega (John Travolta) are driving in Jules Chevy Nova and as Vega tells Jules about European McDonalds and what they call cheese burgers…there is a mural of the scene painted on the wall.

It is not a large place. it seats around 60 inside, with another 20-25 on it’s outdoor patio.   To maintain the character of their 110 year old building, they left a lot of original exposed brick walls and used Edison-bulb light fixtures throughout. Their front counter was built with 100 year old reclaimed wood from Northern Michigan.

The menu, while not big, has some solid selections on it that blend both American and Mediterranean flavors and all the burgers are Halal.  They have very creative burgers like the Mia Wallace (Burger Patty, Mesquite BBQ Chips, Fire Roasted Poblanos & Corn, House Smoked Candied Turkey Bacon, Honey-Ancho BBQ Aioli, with American & Swiss) or the Beirut Burger (Creamy Cole Slaw, Fries, Nablus Pickles, Seasonal Tomatoes, Cheese Fondue, and Ketchup)

However burgers are not all they do. They have chicken sandwiches, like the Vincent Vega (A Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich) or their Marsellus Wallace (A Fried Chicken Sandwich with a fried egg and sweet chili butter). Other sandwich options include the Royale Brisket Sandwich with 18 hour smoked brisket, roasted corn, roasted peppers and onions, cole slaw, Royale Sauce and Cheese Fondue.  And the “All Up In Your Grill” cheese sandwich with Cheese Fondue, Smoked Gouda, Parmesan, Fried Egg, Turkey Bacon. Served with Roasted Tomato Basil Soup.

Now here is a place to save room for dessert so you can try one of their delicious hand spun custard shakes with flavors like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch Berries.  You will truly enjoy the experience of this upscale fast food spot

Royale With Cheese is located at 4163 Cass Ave on the Corner of Cass and Willis. They are open every day. Monday thru Thursday 11 AM to 8 PM Friday 11 AM to 9 PM Saturday 12 PM to 9 PM and Sunday 12 PM to 6 PM.

Until next week . . . . live well, eat well and enjoy life!
