Metro Detroit: Commerce’s Benstein Grill

This week we are in Commerce at the Benstein Grille.  The Benstein Grille is not a new destination. They have been around for over 8 years now . . . but it wasn’t until recently that we were able to get there to check them out.  Since they opened in April of 2015, they have gathered quite a following from locals in Commerce as well as the surrounding communities of Novi, Walled Lake, Wolverine Lake and Wixom.  The owners Mike Richardson and Glen Kaplan actually picked this location due to its proximity to all the surrounding communities.

This place is pretty cool with it’s modern look and open spacious layout.  The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and courteous. They offer a full bar with a great selection of craft cocktails and specialty draft beers.  We were meeting our friends Tom & Andrea Shaffer for dinner, and they recommended this place. It was moderately busy but not too packed.

Their menu is broken down like many standard menus.  Starters, soups and salads, entrees, pastas, seafood and sandwiches etc.  The food however is not standard by any means.  We started with some calamari, stuffed mushrooms and their signature 2 onion, onion soup. The calamari was lightly tempura battered and served with a Hawaiian chili sauce.  There were also pieces of fried pepperoncini peppers which were absolutely delicious.  The mushroom caps were stuffed with a 4 cheese and sausage stuffing and topped with a Chardonnay & wild mushroom cream sauce that would have made a great mushroom soup.  The onion soup was not your typical onion soup either.  It didn’t come out with cheese melted all over it, instead it had a Gruyere and Swiss cheese crouton in the bottom of the bowl…unique and delicious.

For Entrees we ordered The Grille’s Pork Chop, Pit Smoked Brisket, Lamb Chops and the Shrimp and Grits.  Teresa and I had the pork chop and brisket.  The pork chop is a nice bone-in chop with a maple mustard glaze and served with bacon which was tender and delicious.  The brisket was served with a brown sugar BBQ sauce and it was a very generous portion for the price.  I am a brisket sob and this definitely hit the spot with me.  Both the brisket and the porkchop were served with a sweet potato chorizo hash which was crazy good and the perfect complement to both dishes.

Tom had the lambchops (my 2nd choice) and Andrea had the shrimp and grits.  Both looked delicious.  The lamb chops were 4 nice size loin chops served with a zip sauce and buttermilk mashed.  I think they may have also had some of the gravy from the mushroom caps on them.  The shrimp and grits are not your normal shrimp and grits.  They are garlic-seared shrimp with a spicy chorizo grits, mushrooms, red peppers in an herb wine sauce and served with toasted Artisan bread.

Everything was just delicious, we can’t wait to go back.  They also have a burger that is called the B.G. Deluxe 2 Napkin Burger and it is good.  Cooked to perfection and it comes with fries, something that is hard to find in todays burger world. Here are some more pictures of their amazing food:

Benstein Grill is located at 2435 Benstein Rd in commerce and is open Sunday through Thursday from noon till 9PM and Friday and Saturday from noon till 10 PM.
