Metro Detroit: Plymouth’s Park Place Gastropub

336 Main was a great martini and piano bar in Plymouth, featuring live music, great cocktails but lacked in the food area.  The owners had been looking to make a change, from a piano bar into a restaurant bar. But they had to wait until they had finished their work on another property, Center Street Grill in Northville, formerly The Starting Gate. In 2017, 336 Main was closed and 7 months later Park Place Gastropub opened its doors.

Their thought was to use as many Michigan sourced and based products as possible.  They offer 12 reasonably priced craft beers on tap, that all are Michigan made.  Even the wooden clipboards that hold the beer menus and guest checks are made from white cedar from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  They also offer over 50 different craft cocktails, and there are 40+ canned and bottled beers to choose from.

The galley style restaurant layout has been set up so anyone can look toward the front of the bar and see Kellog Park in the distance. The interior decor has that rustic feel, with wood walls and floors and barrelheads decorationg the walls. It is a very welcoming and comfortable.

Some of you  might think…What is a Gastropub?  The best way to describe it would be a Pub style establishment that serves restaurant style food, not your typical pub food.  It is a phrase that as was coined in the 1990’s in the United Kingdom.

The downstairs used to be a cool bar area, when it was 336 Main. Now it is the kitchen but as you can see it is very beautiful!

They offer everything  from fried pickles to steaks, salmon and pasta dishes.  While you won’t find those on their happy hour menu, they are reasonably priced main entrees, with nothing over $23.

So lets talk about the happy hour specials!

Their happy hour menu features some of their most popular items at a discounted price.

DRINKS

  • One of my favorites, Short’s Local Light pints for $3

  • Shooters Amber Ale for $3.50 (a beer brewed by Brew Detroit specifically for their restaurant group)

  • Jack and Titos for $4.50

  • House wines for $4.

FOOD

  • Park Fries for $6.50

  • Goat Cheese dip for $7.25

  • Angry Chicken Slider for $3.50

  • A jumbo Bavarian pretzel with dips for $6

  • Regular old school sliders for $3.50.

We ordered the Park Fries which are skin on fries with truffle oil, sea salt, shredded parmesan cheese and fresh parsley.  If you have never had truffle fries you need to try them, it adds a layer of deliciousness to already delicious fries.  AND IT’S BIG HUGE PILE OF FRIES!

Next we had the Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel which took up the whole plate.  It was served with mustard, cheese sauce and a salted caramel butter.  Having 3 choices for dipping made every bite a little different.

Lastly the OG Slider and Angry Chicken sandwich.

This is a lot of food for $20!

Now they have a good number of mini burgers on their menu, 21 to be exact.  As previously mentioned you can get the Old School (traditional) slider and Angry Chicken during happy hour.

The Old School Slider is exactly that - a house ground burger with grilled onions, pickles, American cheese with mustard and ketchup.  It was GOOD!

A bit larger than a regular slider since it is on a brioche bun.  It was really good but I was focused on the Angry Chicken.  The Angry Chicken is a crispy chicken breast, Buffalo sauce, cheddar cheese topped with onion straws, shredded lettuce and tomato on a brioche bun.

We found happy hour here to not only be enjoyable but also very affordable and the nice thing about most happy hours is that is usually not overly busy.

As always, we try to keep the bill in th $30 range:

They also have a spacious outside dining area, right out on main street.

Park Place is open daily at noon until 11PM on Tuesday Thursday, 12AM on Friday and Saturday, and 10PM on Sunday.  They are closed on Monday.

Until next time . . . live well, eat well and enjoy life!
